Hughes H-4 Hercules Flying Boat Tour

Come along on a tour of the Howard Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat on display at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. The press called it the "Spruce Goose" but Hughes disliked that name. Enjoy the video of this HUGE aircraft and be sure to look at how the aircraft on display around it look so small.

Plane Savers Triplane and Foxmoth

For the vintage aircraft fan YouTube is becoming a cool place to find content. Mikey McBryan and his crew wrapped up the saving of a D-Day veteran C-47/DC-3 this summer and are on to their next project. A Fokker Dr. 1 Triplane replica. The replica was involved in a landing accident so it needs a rebuild. Follow along as they resurrect the Triplane along with another additional project that was just added... a Foxmoth!

Pearl Harbor Day

Remembering Pearl Harbor this weekend in 2019. I have been fortunate to see two of only a hand full of aircraft that survived the December 7th attack. A Grumman Duck and Ford Trimotor are two that are a part of the Mid America Flight Museum collection in East Texas. The video attached here highlights those two survivors.

Aviator Holiday Gift Guide

The Another Time Aviator Holiday Gift Guide

Need gift ideas for the aviation enthusiast on your list? The holiday shopping has begun and here are some of our recommendations for this year!

BVR Design has an outstanding selection of t-shirts, posters and more. From vintage racers to jets there is something for the aviator on your list. Be sure to check out the cool poster we co-designed… the Time Flies Racer Poster!

Want to read one of our favorite World War Two biographies? Snag A Higher Call and other books from Adam Makos. This year I added Devotion to my own Christmas list.

Are you a watch enthusiast with a bent toward aviation history? Cruise through the selection of sharp watches from AVI-8. Hurricane, Lancaster, Harrier II and Hunter are just some of the aircraft themed watches AVI-8 has created.

For the die-hard Warbird fan consider the book published with photographs from the “glory days” of Texas Warbird airshows in Breckenridge, Texas. The small town turned out some epic airshows with the gathering of World War Two aircraft from all over the country. Snag a copy of this book from the Blurb bookstore. Choose from ebook, softbound or hardbound editions.

Military aircraft enthusiasts will be blown away by the awesome art on the posters from Squadron Posters. Aircraft, military units and even maps round out the sweet selection of posters.

To add notes for research, training or even a log book consider a leather journal or binder from Murdy Creative. My binder is super durable and high on style points. I carry mine with me to work everyday!

Scale Warbird Models

This past summer our boy and I finished up a couple of scale Warbird models. When the Texas weather really heats up in July and August we spend some afternoons tinkering on models. We painted and added decals to a few and they were added to our displays in the office.

Quick build 1/72 P-47 Thunderbolt and 1/48 F8F Bearcat

1/48 PBY Catalina

1/72 F4U Corsair

The weather has been pretty nice this Fall so we are visiting local airports shooting photos and videos. We will be back on more models this winter! Watch for a few more model posts after the holidays.

What are your favorite Warbird scale models? Click comment to post.

Visit to the Vintage Flying Museum - Video

Our latest video production has been posted on our YouTube Channel. This video features highlights from visits to the Vintage Flying Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. Our boy and I visit every couple months to check out "the bomber hangar" as we call it. Depending on their airshow schedules there could be multiple World War Two bombers on display. The Commemorative Air Force B-29 FIFI and B-24 Diamond Lil both winter in the museum at Meacham Field. Also inside are two Douglas Invaders along with other Warbird and vintage aircraft. When in North Texas stop by this great collection housed in a World War Two era B-29 bomber hangar. Watch the video for a walk around inside.

Evergreen Aviation Museum Visit

Hughes H-4 Hercules
A family trip had us in the Pacific Northwest about two weeks ago. One day I took our boy to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. My last visit there was over 10 years ago so I was curious to see the museum again. A good number of the Warbirds in the collection were purchased by the Collings Foundation but I was pleasantly surprised that there were plenty of unique airplanes on display. A good number of vintage, Warbird and jets fill the space around the flying boat.

H-4 is just huge!
The main mission for the trip was to have our boy see the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat. The massive airplane just overwhelmed him! The 8 engine, one of a kind aircraft fills the main display building with ALL the other airplanes fitting under its wings and tail!

The Goose and PBY look small.

Me-262 replica on display.
So I highly recommend the museum. Plan on spending 4-6 hours there to make the cost worth it and explore the multi-building museum.

Curtiss Robin - Mid America Flight Museum

A few weeks ago I was offered a ride in one of my favorite airplanes. While visiting the Mid America Flight Museum in East Texas I was able to jump in for a flight in Robin serial number 237, NC3277G. This Robin was used in the movie "Pearl" and it well taken care of here in Texas. The roomy cabin for two offers good visibility out the side windows and is very stable. Over 700 were produced but they are rarely seen in numbers today. So it was a fun treat to fly in this vintage ship.

TBM Avenger Throwback Photo

30 years ago! A way back photo from 1989. An airshow in Waco, Texas that my dad and I went to and met the crew from the Lone Star Flight Museum. We were offered tours of the B-25, Super T-6 and TBM. Here I am in the TBM. I has been refurbished and returned to flying with Sanders Aeronautics in California. After all these years it is cool to know this TBM is active and flying.

He111/CASA2111 Cavanaugh Flight Museum

This picture was taken this week at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum of their CASA 2111. The Spanish built version of the He 111. It flew in the movie The Battle of Britain and then went on serving with the Spanish Air Force after filming. I call this "hangar hunting" as you never know what will be stashed in a hangar while hunting for vintage airplanes at airports! There are no plans to return it to airworthy for now. But one day we can hope the airframe does return to the skies.

PBY Catalina Model

A couple weeks ago I finished up this Monogram 1/48 scale PBY Catalina model. Snagged it from a buddy in a partially built state. Used some on hand dark sea blue and yellow to make it look like a later model Catalina in a RESCUE scheme. Fun build. It just meant to be a nice model from a couple feet away, hanging in the office. Turning final to splash down!

Scale Aircraft Models

After all these years I still enjoy building scale aircraft models. With our son now helping with the builds AND selecting the NEXT builds it has been fun to work on new models. We visited a scale model show in Arlington, Texas this morning and snagged a few more aircraft for the collection. Highlighted below are a few awesome builds we saw on display.

1/32 Scale P-51 Racer

1/48 Scale P-38

Taking our haul to the car
In the next couple weeks I will post some pictures of some of our recent builds.

Aviation Videos on YouTube

Aviation Videos

Yes, there are plenty of videos on YouTube but lately I have notice the quality of the videos being produced improving. Now my focus is vintage aircraft but my interest can bleed over to other aircraft when I see cool content. My last post was a link to Mikey McBryan's Plane Saves. This post will include links to other channels that I have subscribed to.

Dewey Davenport is the owner of several vintage airplanes and he has been visiting the restoration of the Mid America Flight Museum's Travel 6000 at the shop in Ohio. Follow along to see the restoration and other aviation stories.

Eric Goujon is one of the pilots with The Flying Bulls collection in Austria. His short videos highlight his flying airshows around Europe. The scenery is AMAZING as well as the aircraft!

EAA will post video content and they can highlight vintage aircraft. This one tells the story of the rare Aeronca LB Low-Wing.

Kermit Weeks and his Fantasy of Flight are know worldwide for being one of the largest vintage aircraft collections. He has been sharing a steady stream of videos in recent times. Some go back in time to show is travels to visit restoration projects while others show his current hangar work.

Just the awesome videography alone will dazzle you on Trent Palmer's channel. Trent invites you along on flights around the West in his Kitfox. Check out this one showing his new 360 camera.

The modified Wilga that captured the entire aviation community is owned by Mike Patey. His channel followed the build of this crazy cool STOL (Short Take Off & Landing) aircraft. Now he is moving on to his next aircraft build starting with a Super Cub frame. Tour his hangar and hear about his next project in the video below.

Enjoy the hours of content. I will post more cool video links when I find them!
