Scale Warbird Models

This past summer our boy and I finished up a couple of scale Warbird models. When the Texas weather really heats up in July and August we spend some afternoons tinkering on models. We painted and added decals to a few and they were added to our displays in the office.

Quick build 1/72 P-47 Thunderbolt and 1/48 F8F Bearcat

1/48 PBY Catalina

1/72 F4U Corsair

The weather has been pretty nice this Fall so we are visiting local airports shooting photos and videos. We will be back on more models this winter! Watch for a few more model posts after the holidays.

Visit to the Vintage Flying Museum - Video

Our latest video production has been posted on our YouTube Channel. This video features highlights from visits to the Vintage Flying Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. Our boy and I visit every couple months to check out "the bomber hangar" as we call it. Depending on their airshow schedules there could be multiple World War Two bombers on display. The Commemorative Air Force B-29 FIFI and B-24 Diamond Lil both winter in the museum at Meacham Field. Also inside are two Douglas Invaders along with other Warbird and vintage aircraft. When in North Texas stop by this great collection housed in a World War Two era B-29 bomber hangar. Watch the video for a walk around inside.

Evergreen Aviation Museum Visit

Hughes H-4 Hercules
A family trip had us in the Pacific Northwest about two weeks ago. One day I took our boy to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. My last visit there was over 10 years ago so I was curious to see the museum again. A good number of the Warbirds in the collection were purchased by the Collings Foundation but I was pleasantly surprised that there were plenty of unique airplanes on display. A good number of vintage, Warbird and jets fill the space around the flying boat.

H-4 is just huge!
The main mission for the trip was to have our boy see the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat. The massive airplane just overwhelmed him! The 8 engine, one of a kind aircraft fills the main display building with ALL the other airplanes fitting under its wings and tail!

The Goose and PBY look small.

Me-262 replica on display.
So I highly recommend the museum. Plan on spending 4-6 hours there to make the cost worth it and explore the multi-building museum.

Curtiss Robin - Mid America Flight Museum

A few weeks ago I was offered a ride in one of my favorite airplanes. While visiting the Mid America Flight Museum in East Texas I was able to jump in for a flight in Robin serial number 237, NC3277G. This Robin was used in the movie "Pearl" and it well taken care of here in Texas. The roomy cabin for two offers good visibility out the side windows and is very stable. Over 700 were produced but they are rarely seen in numbers today. So it was a fun treat to fly in this vintage ship.

TBM Avenger Throwback Photo

30 years ago! A way back photo from 1989. An airshow in Waco, Texas that my dad and I went to and met the crew from the Lone Star Flight Museum. We were offered tours of the B-25, Super T-6 and TBM. Here I am in the TBM. I has been refurbished and returned to flying with Sanders Aeronautics in California. After all these years it is cool to know this TBM is active and flying.

He111/CASA2111 Cavanaugh Flight Museum

This picture was taken this week at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum of their CASA 2111. The Spanish built version of the He 111. It flew in the movie The Battle of Britain and then went on serving with the Spanish Air Force after filming. I call this "hangar hunting" as you never know what will be stashed in a hangar while hunting for vintage airplanes at airports! There are no plans to return it to airworthy for now. But one day we can hope the airframe does return to the skies.

PBY Catalina Model

A couple weeks ago I finished up this Monogram 1/48 scale PBY Catalina model. Snagged it from a buddy in a partially built state. Used some on hand dark sea blue and yellow to make it look like a later model Catalina in a RESCUE scheme. Fun build. It just meant to be a nice model from a couple feet away, hanging in the office. Turning final to splash down!

Scale Aircraft Models

After all these years I still enjoy building scale aircraft models. With our son now helping with the builds AND selecting the NEXT builds it has been fun to work on new models. We visited a scale model show in Arlington, Texas this morning and snagged a few more aircraft for the collection. Highlighted below are a few awesome builds we saw on display.

1/32 Scale P-51 Racer

1/48 Scale P-38

Taking our haul to the car
In the next couple weeks I will post some pictures of some of our recent builds.
